La Rochelle,  Normandy,  France,  a rebellious, little  fortified town on the Atlantic coast of France,  just south of England. was no ordinary small town.  This was an important  harbour fought over by kings and queens,  with a colourful history of knights and pirates,  medieaval towers and gothic spires

It was the home port of  many  explorers,  sent out by their rulers to pillage the new world,  return with gold,  trade the slaves and bring home furs.  But when Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes,  ending all religious freedom,  there resulted a huge migration  of ordinary people to New France on the east coast of North America,  but mostly to Quebec.

So it was that so many Frenchmen and their families,  left La Rochelle  for for the New World, especially Quebec, many  settling in  Ile d'Orleans,  a region near  Montreal.  Their French names spread throughout the Montreal region,  into Quebec City and Ile aux Coudres in the St. Lawrence river,  each generation securing its position in the provice with large families.

The TERRIONS - A FOUNDING FAMILY of MARMORA

By Peggy Tupper

Many residents of Marmora descend from one couple, Jean Baptiste Therrien and Catherine Roy.  They have many descendants not only in Marmora but all over North America.  Jean Baptiste Therrien was born about 1790.  He came to the Bay of Quinte as a “voyageur” or fur trader in 1808.   The first record of his existence is from an official database of voyageurs.

  • Date de l'engagement 1808-04-28

  • Nom de l'engagé THERRIEN, JEAN-BAPTISTE

  • Destination de l'engagé LA BAIE QUINTE

At that time,  most of the southern edge of the province of Ontario (or Upper Canada as it was then called ) was dominated by the  English.  Over time the French name became anglicized to Terrion.  The fur trade had a wonderful history.   http://firstpeoplesofcanada.com/fp_furtrade/fp_furtrade2.html

There were many children baptized with the name of Jean Baptiste Therrien and each one was investigated but in spite of diligent research into Quebec records, no trace of this Jean Baptiste Therrien can be found.  At some point JB Therrien married a woman with the name of Catherine Roy.  Although Catholic records are extensive and thorough, no baptismal or marriage information can be found from any parish.  Perhaps Jean and Catharine had what was called a country marriage.

In the early 1800s there were United Empire Loyalists in Belleville and Kingston but nothing further north.   When a road was cut through in 1820, there were no Europeans living in the  Marmora area but there were indigenous people camped at the river.

It was an untamed wilderness that Jean Baptiste Therrien and his bride settled in.  In harsh conditions they successfully brought at least 10 children into the world.  They had five boys and five girls that have been documented.  Their first child was John born about 1819.    Records show that four of the girls married and had large families with surnames such as Corbier, Demars, Bedore and Darrah.   Only two of the boys married.  John stayed in the Marmora area and farmed like his father but his brother Francis became a lumberman.  Francis first moved to Mills Point (Deseronto) with his family about 1870.  Some 10 years later Francis, his wife, two married daughters (and their families) all moved to Waubaushene on Georgia Bay.     The names John and Francis permeated the family for many generations.

Bob O'Brien writes:

My g. grandfather: Michael Bedore settled in Marmora mid 1800s. He was said to have been the first shoemaker there. Michael married Catherine Therrien, ( Terrion) and they had about 9 children, one of which was my grandpa George who became a farmer. George married twice having a total of 9 children who went on to proliferate the Bedore name. Many Marmora names are married int the Bedore name and vice versa. I am working on the family tree. If anyone wishes to see it or add to it, my e-mail is stubborncaterpillar@hotmail.ca. I live in Trenton.
